Friday - Sunday, Dec. 7, 8 & 9, 2018 (2.5 days)
Becoming a good woodworker requires intimate knowledge of the substrate we all work with: wood! Distilled
from a 40-hour Dept. of Forestry curriculum, this course will give you great hands-on experience with
learning about the physical structure and properties of wood and how to use that knowledge to tailor your
woodworking and finishing skills, how lumber is cut and what that means for your projects, how to select
the best wood for your project from retail outlets, and how to understand the behavior of wood over time,
among many other things. Understand the need for fleam on saws, adjustable-mouth planes and the
different pitch on chisels. The course also includes basic instruction in lumber grading and how to read the
wood to recognize defects. Sunday we will fire up the sawmill to show students first-hand how lumber is
milled and graded. If you have Ron's The Woodworker's Guide to Wood DVDs or have taken this course at
The Woodworking Shows or Woodworking in America, you will appreciate this expanded version of the
course, with plenty of hands-on experience and a-ha moments. If you have never experienced this course
in any form with Ron, you're in for a treat, and some serious education that will help you greatly in
improving the quality of your projects.
